Air Quality Impact Assessment – Proposed Opencast Mine

As part of our commitment to supporting responsible environmental planning, we conducted an Air Quality Impact Assessment (AQIA) for a proposed opencast mining development in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential air quality impacts from the construction and operational activities of the proposed mine on surrounding communities and the environment.

The AQIA involved a comprehensive baseline assessment, including analysis of meteorological conditions, ambient air quality data, and identification of nearby sensitive receptors. Using AERMOD dispersion modelling, we simulated potential emissions of dustfall, PM₁₀, and PM₂.₅ from key activities such as drilling, blasting, materials handling, vehicle hauling on unpaved roads, and wind erosion from exposed areas.

Multiple construction and operational scenarios were assessed to understand emission patterns and their compliance with South African National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Our findings showed that while some pollutant concentrations were predicted to exceed standards within and just beyond the site boundary, particularly during peak operational phases, the impacts on distant sensitive receptors were mostly limited to PM₁₀ under certain conditions.

We proposed a range of mitigation measures, including water suppression systems, dust extraction units, and continuous air quality monitoring, to reduce potential impacts. Engagement with nearby communities and real-time feedback mechanisms were also recommended to manage health and nuisance risks proactively.

This assessment contributed to the environmental authorisation process and forms a key part of our client’s strategy to minimise air quality impacts throughout the mine’s lifecycle.
